Tips and Trivia

Mold spores are so small that 250,000 of them can fit on the head of a pin. How to get rid of them? They all need water to grow, so work on the water problem. Fix leaky pipes around tubs and sinks, vent bathrooms, reduce indoor humidity with air conditioners and dehumidifiers. And don't install carpet where you have a persistent moisture problem.

Asthma has a greater impact on women than men. A survey of 2000 found that 9.1% of women had asthma to 5.1% of men. Of the more than 500 women studied, 56% have had an attack that led them to an ER. So, especially if you're female, don't put your asthma on the back burner. Take time to manage it now.

A flickering flame is a sign that soot is being produced. Soot can cause allergies because mites and other allergens cling to it. If you're allergic, it's better not to burn candles at all, but if you must, use tapers rather that jar candles because the flames burn more steadily, producing less soot.

Dust mites love down. So put down jackets, pillow and comforter in the dryer for 20 minutes on a moderate setting once a week. Heat kills mites and their eggs.

Cow's milk causes more allergies than any other food. Typically, people are allergic to the proteins in the milk...not lactose (the sugar in milk) as is commonly thought. If milk upsets your stomach or causes sinus congestion, or you have frequent ear infections, consider stopping milk for one week to see if symptoms disappear.
