Occupational
Asthma |
Occupational
asthma is caused by exposure to airborne dusts, gases, vapors or
fumes in the workplace. It may develop for the first time in
a previously healthy worker, or pre-existing asthma may be aggravated
by exposures within the work place. Workers at risk may include
adhesive handlers, animal handlers, bakers, janitors, hospital staff,
carpet makers, hairdressers, and carpenters, among others.
And it's
not just the worker that is at risk. People living near factories
may also be exposed to harmful triggers of asthma and may suffer
symptoms as well.
There can
be permanent remissions if it's caught early enough. It's important
to pay attention to the timing of your symptoms. Do they lessen
on weekends or vacations? Do they seem to worsen on Mondays? If
you suspect occupational asthma, contact your allergist immediately
so that early treatment can begin.
