Metered-Dose Inhalers: How To Use Them

Practice makes perfect when it comes to the use of metered-dose inhalers but that practice must be the proper practice. Just using the inhaler isn't enough. Many people who use it do so improperly. They think they are getting help but they're not. Most mistakes have to do with the coordination that it takes to squeeze the canister, and inhale the medication at the right time. Other common mistakes include inhaling through the nose instead of the mouth, inhaling too quickly and forgetting to take the cap off the inhaler mouthpiece.

Just reading the directions isn't enough. You need to ask your allergist and/or the office nursing staff for a demonstration. Then practice at home in front of a mirror.

Using your inhaler is just one part of the overall treatment plan that will help you to take charge of your asthma.
