Grade Your School on Asthma Control

How asthma-friendly is your school? Poor indoor air quality and classroom pets may increase both long-and short-term health problems among students and staff.Classroom pets such as hamsters, mice and birds, mold and mildew, chalk dust, dry erase markers, as well as laboratory chemicals are among the culprits…and tobacco smoke and pesticides are still a problem.

Does the school have nurse available on-site to help students with their medications?

Asthma is the leading cause of school absenteeism. It causes more missed days of school than any other chronic disease. It can and does also affect student performance at school. Teachers, coaches, nurses, and administrators need specific instructions if they are to respond to the condition promptly. Parents and school authorities can work together to make school a safer place, if there is motivation, a plan and the authority to institute that plan.
