You've heard
of the first, but the second? The
letters stand for gastroesophageal reflux disease. Even babies
can have it.
GERD occurs when the
valve between the esophagus and the stomach doesn't close properly,
and stomach acids back up into the esophagus, an organ that is
not constructed to handle them.
It's important to know whether you or family members are one of the
fifty percent or more people who have GERD and may not even be aware
of it. To determine if there is a connection between GERD and asthma,
doctors often prescribe a medication to control the acid and then
watch to see if it lessens asthma symptoms.
