Controlling Holiday Allergies

Kissing? Yes, kissing and hugging can do it and even perfume can do it. That’s how many respiratory viruses get passed around during the holidays when family and friends visit each other. The cold winter air as well as indoor air quality, can also be a problem for those with viral illnesses and asthma.

And, with all the holiday goodies to eat, food selection can be a big problem. At a time when cookies and other treats are available, the chance of accidental ingestion increases. Common food allergies include, but are not limited to, milk, eggs, wheat, peanuts and tree nuts such as almonds, hazelnuts, pecans and walnuts. Also keep an eye out for such “goodies” as eggnog, fruitcake, cheese, macaroni mixes, quiches and chip dips.

If you’re picking out a holiday tree, there are things to consider in selecting either a live tree or an artificial one. The accumulation of dust and mold on artificial Christmas trees that are used year after year can become a serious problem for allergy sufferers. Real trees may also act as a source for mold or may carry pollens from other sources such as ragweed.

It pays to prepare well in advance and take preventive action.
