The Eyes Have It

Eyes have been called "the mirror of the soul." They've been praised in prose and poetry and they are usually blue, green, brown, or hazel.

But, when you look in your mirror and see eyes that are itchy, teary, red or pink, and are more sensitive to bright light…or if your eyelid has some mild swelling, you may have allergic conjunctivitis. Of course some of these symptoms can also be the result of other conditions, so the best person to determine which is which is your allergist.

If, indeed, it is allergic conjunctivitis you can begin by finding out what is setting off this allergic response and then you can try to avoid or reduce contact with whatever that is. You may also be advised to lessen your symptoms by using air conditioning, applying cool compresses, staying indoors and not rubbing your eyes. Use of prescription antihistamine eye drops may be necessary to treat the symptoms in some cases.
