Decorating Your Baby’s Nursery

You’ve been waiting for the big event for nine months. You have the crib set up, the sheet with baby animals on it, the colorful walls, overhead mobile, the music box and…what did you forget?

Sometimes we bring baby home to the sickest room in the house. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology says the “It makes good common sense that, since some airborne substances my trigger allergy or asthma symptoms, reducing contact with these substances early in life may delay or prevent the onset of allergy or asthma symptoms.“ The most prevalent indoor allergens are dust mites, pollen, pet dander and mold.

If you’re painting the walls, you night want to start by looking into eco-friendly paints.  Then avoid all feather bedding, and use dust-proof casings for your baby’s mattress. Overhead mobiles and wall hangings may be cute but they are also collect dust!

Crib bumpers should be simple and washable...no ruffles or pleats.

You are bound to get some stuffed animals. They should never be placed in the crib and, if used, they should be washable, too.

If allergies run in your families, or even if they don’t, consider placing a HEPA filter (High Efficiency Particulate Air Filter) under the crib. This filter will help to decrease airborne allergens such as pollens, mold spores and animal dander.
