Company in Your Bed

What do dogs, mothers and dust mites have in common? They all love you.

You may have only one dog, or one mother but you probably have thousands and thousands of dust mites in your bed, on your pillow or in your favorite chair. The mite's mission is to eat your dead skin cells.

Although they can't bite you, they can make you sneeze or cough. They can make your eyes itch and your nose run. They can also make you wheeze.

What can you do about them? Fight back with these tips:

  • Encase your mattress, box spring and pillows in allergen-impermeable casings.
  • Wash bed pads and bedding at least once a week in hot water and dry them in a gas or electric dryer, not outside.
  • Remove dust catchers such as rugs, carpeting and heavy draperies or Venetian blinds.
  • Dust with a damp or slightly oily cloth.
