 Allergy or Sinus Infection?
Many people confuse seasonal allergies with sinus infections. Some symptoms are similar..stuffy, painful nose and sinus cavities, often with sneezing, coughing and other cold symptoms. However, there are some differences and it's important to know what they are so that you can prevent them in the first place or get the right treatment.
The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology cites the strong link between allergies and sinus infections, since the two conditions often go hand in hand. In fact, one study listed noted that just over half of all people diagnosed with a sinus infection also suffered from nasal allergies.
Fever, sore throat, muscle aches and colored mucus generally indicate sinus infection. On the other hand, allergies tend to include itching and sneezing which occur due to the exposure of particles like dust, pollens, mold spores and also animal dander.
Sinus infections can occur at any time of the year and are usually accompanied by a thick greenish or yellow mucus. Allergies tend to ebb at the end of a particular season and are usually accompanied by a clear, thin mucus.
The best way to find out the answers to your questions is to have your symptoms checked out by your allergist.
