Allergies and Herbal Supplements

Taking herbal supplements is tempting.  The media abound with testimonials from people who supposedly have solved their medical problems with “safe, natural, over-the-counter” pills.

The makers of herbal supplements say they can treat or prevent a host of conditions and symptoms, including arthritis, headaches, colds, and allergies.

Although these supplements may contain natural ingredients, some of these products also contain potential allergens and chemicals that can make you sick, and they may not be listed on the product’s label.

So do not assume a product is safe or effective.  Herbs are not overseen by a federal regulatory agency for guarantee of quality control or safety.

That’s why it’s important to check with your allergist before taking any herbal remedies.  Herbs can interact with your medications and they may also be harmful for certain health conditions or medical procedures.
