It’s the sneezin’ season, but it’s not the same as last year. Unfortunately allergy seasons in general have been getting longer and more challenging, says the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. In the East, earlier heavy snow and rain have encouraged tree pollen. Now, sunny, warmer weather have hit us hard and pollens are prospering. In addition, heavy rains and flooding have primed the season for molds.
According to AAFA, if you have the symptoms, you are one of about 50 million Americans suffering from allergies. The symptoms usually include some combination of sneezing, sniffling, coughing, stuffiness, itchiness in the nose, eyes or ears, and the especially telltale persistent upward nose rubbing known as the allergic salute.
It’s important to see an allergist if you have these persistent symptoms because , if left untreated, you can develop other medical problems such as asthma, eczema, sinusitis and increased susceptibility to picking up colds.
